On Sunday, April 25, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County will host its inaugural “Girls Go the Distance” family walkathon and fundraiser at the Jones Beach Boardwalk, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone.
“The ‘Girls Go the Distance’ Girl Scouts of Nassau County Family walkathon is a fun and interactive two-mile walk that will raise funds for the GSNC’s Healthy Living Initiative,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Girls define health in their own terms, placing as much emphasis on emotional and social well-being as physical health, nutrition and physical fitness. This new Healthy Living Initiative helps to bring a unique perspective to keeping girls healthy by focusing not only on healthy eating and physical fitness, but on increasing girls’ self-esteem, media image awareness and how to develop healthy relationships.”
The walkathon will begin at the Zach’s Bay portion of the Jones Beach Boardwalk. Participants should park in Parking Field 5 and follow the signs toward registration, which begins at 9:45 a.m. All participants will be able to participate in Healthy Living themed games, activities and projects. The two-mile walkathon will begin promptly at noon.
For those interested in pre-registering for walkathon, go to www.gsnc.kintera. org/walk. Councilman Macagnone noted that participants can walk as an individual or start a team by asking friends to walk along with them and set a fundraising goal to help support this worthy cause. Any interested individuals who are looking for further information about this event are urged to call the Girl Scouts of Nassau County directly at 516-741-2550, ext. 240.
