First, Second Time’s a Charm For Hicksville’s Jason Siegel

T-Shirt Logo Chosen Back-to-Back for Army Ten-Miler Race

Right around this time about 365 days ago, Jason Siegel’s T-shirt design was voted as the official logo for the annual U.S. Army Ten-Miler race in Washington, D.C.

Siegel, a 2004 Hicksville High School graduate, took home the honors again this year and his design will be featured on over 30,000 race T-shirts on Oct. 9 during the world’s third largest 10-mile event, which is open to both citizens and military runners.

“I started kind of trying to think of ideas last year after I went to the event, taking all the mental images there and trying to remember stuff. The research took a little longer on this one,” said Siegel, a graphics designer at Rallye Motors.

Bouncing between multiple ideas, Siegel submitted two designs and the winning logo won by over 100 votes, receiving a total of 1,313 out of 5,167 online votes from registered runners.

His approach, Siegel noted, was not to feature too many colors or details that could possibly distract from the main symbols of the ornate buildings and soldier silhouettes.

“Last year the color scheme I had was more red, white and blue and this year I wanted to also have the red, white and blue but also wanted to incorporate the U.S. Army’s colors. This year’s was a little more stuff in there than last years, a little busier, so I was trying to tone it down color-wise and not throw too much in there,” Siegel explained.

For his winning efforts last year, Siegel was awarded a brand new iMac computer and Adobe software package. He’ll receive a new iPad2, more software and five official race T-shirts featuring his design this year.

All race proceeds benefit Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), which supports Soldier and Soldier family programs. The two-day Health & Fitness Expo, presented by Dell Federal, preceding the race hosts over 75 exhibitors and 35,000 attendees. Race day activities include a “world class” race, with elite athletes, live music, Hooah Tents featuring Army pride from around the world, youth runs presented by Health Net, static displays, and much more. A SUNY Oswego alum currently living in Queens, Siegel said he plans on once again attending the event in October.

“Last year I stayed with my aunt, who lives down there, so I’ll see if we can coordinate schedules. If not I have a cousin down there, too, so I’ll try to make it. It was a fun event,” said Siegel.

And right around mid-June in 2012, Siegel will see if the third time is as charming.
