After nearly a decade as a team that wouldn’t split up, the Hicksville Rising Stars (U-19) played their final game on Sunday, June 12. Many of the girls started together in Hicksville’s Giant Squirt League when they were 6 years old with Coach Steve Bonczyk.
When ready to move up to the Travel League in 2002, they formed the Rising Stars led by Coach Steve (with assistance over the years from Dave Sargoy, Carmelo Polito, Frank Minton, Scott Fenwick and team parent Kim Bonczyk). Although they began as a B-team and never reached a Division 1 status, the girls stayed together season after season for the sheer fun of playing the game. You could never tell from the girls’ attitude whether their games were a win or a loss – they were always laughing and kidding around with each other and exemplified team spirit and friendship. They never stopped having fun no matter the outcome. Parents and coaches wish them every success and all good things as they make plans for college.
