Today widespread outrage is being felt after police blasted a crowd of protesters with pepper spray at a California school.
A video has gone viral showing an officer pepper spraying the faces of protesters at the University of California.
University of California Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said in a statement that she was forming a task force to investigate the police action, reported CBS, but a law enforcement official called the use of force “fairly standard police procedure.”
According to the L.A. Times, Katehi said she authorized police to remove the tents, but not to use the pepper spray in the manner shown on the video.
“The events of this intervention have been videotaped and widely distributed. As indicated in various videos, the police used pepper spray against the students who were blocking the way. The use of pepper spray as shown on the video is chilling to us all and raises many questions about how best to handle situations like this,” she said in a statement, reported the NY Daily News.
Reportedly, two students were taken to a local hospital, treated and later released, while others were arrested.
The protest being held at the University California is to support the Occupy Wall Street movement in general.
The Occupy Wall Street movement that started in New York is now in its second month. The protest against corporate greed has spread throughout the nation.
