The Island Trees Wrestling team opened up their season with an impressive showing at the Uniondale Tournament, finishing in second place with 264 team points. The Bulldogs started out hot, wrestling tough through the first two rounds, as they took an early lead in the tournament.
The Bulldogs sent 22 wrestlers into the tournament and 10 placed. Island Trees had five finalists and one champion, Brandon Cassar. Brandon won the 170 lb. weight class and went 4-0 on the day.
Other finalists who placed second were: Chris Donnelly -106 lbs, Lucas Panebianco – 138 lbs, Billy Ziegler -160 lbs., and Tommy Sinclair – 220 lbs. Island Trees also had five wrestlers place for 3rd and 4th. Matt Gund-113 lbs., Tom Mignone -120 lbs., Chris Burns – 132 lbs, A.J. Barletta – 195 lbs., all finished 3rd and Alex Zbikowski -285 lbs. took 4th.
Overall, the Bulldogs looked extremely technical and wrestled well for the first competition of the season. Wrestling is the longest and most difficult sport in the school and the team is ready for a very promising season.
