Retired New York City firefighter to run for office
Kevin Dunn, a 50-year Williston Park resident and graduate of Herricks High School, has announced that he is running for the office of Herricks School Board trustee.
Dunn, a retired New York City Fire Department lieutenant and graduate of Nassau Community College also served on the Williston Park Village Board as trustee from 2006 -2010.
He also served for one year on the Herricks School Board from 2008-2009 and on the site-based committee at Center Street School.
He is an active member of the Herricks athletics and music boosters. Dunn is presently coaching a team in the Williston Park Little League and is a coach in the PAL for the Mineola Chiefs Football program.
Dunn’s Statement
“As a parent I want my youngest son, Daniel, to have the same educational opportunities as his older brothers. I believe the board needs to do a better job during contract negotiations because this is where the bulk of money is invested.
“I tried to implement some cost-saving strategies during the last contract negotiations and start a new program for grade school children when I was on the board, but those ideas were unsupported by the other board members.
“However, with my friend Jim Gounaris on the board and Brian Hassen running unopposed, I look forward to an era of exploring new ideas. One idea, I believe, whose time has come, is the use of solar energy for our schools. In the next five to 10 years I believe schools will be using this wonderful tool for heating. There is one such program recently implemented in a Suffolk County school.
“Most importantly I believe we need to keep our residents informed of what’s going on with our spending with the use of our mailer Dateline: Herricks and other venues.
“There were a number of contributing factors for my resignation last time I was on the board, but the main reason was that I felt I couldn’t do the job the way it should have been done and the way the people of Herricks deserved.”
Dunn and his wife Tina have four children. Matthew and Thomas, recent graduates of Herricks; Johnny, a sophomore at the high school and Daniel who is in the third grade.
