Recently, I attended the Roslyn Country Club Civic Association meeting and at that meeting North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilman Dwyer gave a presentation regarding the purchase of the Roslyn Country Club (RCC) property by the town.
Dwyer stated that the board was one to two weeks away from signing a contract to purchase the property. The plans call for a heated pool, hot tubs and all-season tennis courts. They stated that they wanted to provide high-end features to support the approximately membership cost of $1,000. The plan is to have approximately 800 to 1,000 families as members.
I have attended numerous town meetings related to this project over the last year. Kaiman has always contended that building a pool facility in RCC would benefit the whole town. Tonight in his presentation to the Roslyn Country Civic Association the tone and attitude were very different.
Numerous times, during the night Kaiman made the point that basically the price had to be high to maintain the exclusivity of the facility. He also stated that there were no plans to allow camps to use the pool or for a daily rate.
This all adds up to the town providing a high-end pool facility for a limited number of families with no possible access to the facility for anyone else in the town. Of course, if they don’t achieve their membership goals, any budget shortfall would have to be made up by the town.
If you have concerns about this project, please consider attending a North Hempstead town board meeting or contact your councilperson.
This project will go through unless it’s made clear that the majority of the residents don’t support the plan.
