OB Historical Society Seminar for Preservation
OBHS archivist/librarian Nicole Menchise will hold an informal seminar on best practices for maintaining and storing personal collections. Topics to be discussed are the display and long-term storage of papers, books, textiles, and photographs. 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Oyster Bay Historical Society, Koenig Research Center (behind the Earle-Wightman House), 20 Summit St. Free to members of the society (with special membership opportunities to those living in the 11771 zip code); $10 nonmembers. The discussion will include examples taken from the archives with a tour of the research center’s archival floor. Light refreshments will be served. Blood Drive
Portledge School, 355 Duck Pond Rd., Locust Valley, is hosting a Blood Drive in conjunction with the Long Island Blood Services. Each blood donation can save as many as three lives and the need on Long Island often exceeds the amount donated. All donors must be over 16 years old (with parental consent) and under 76 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Donors can be taking medication and still donate blood. Donors should remember to bring a valid ID (picture or signature) and donor card, if they have one, eat a good meal before they come (nutritious, not fatty) and drink plenty of fluids (juice and water). 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Bahnik Hall. Piano Recital
Pianist Louis Schwizgebel won First Prize in the 2007 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and was presented by the Young Concert Artists Series in his New York debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, sponsored by the Peter Marino Debut Prize, and his Washington, DC, debut at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. He will perform at 6 p.m. at the Grace Auditorium, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, One Bungtown Rd., Cold Spring Harbor. Reservations: Individual tickets will be sold at the door for $20. With author Nick Katsoris and “Loukoumi.” Katsoris will read from his latest book in the Loukoumi series, Loukoumi’s Celebrity Cookbook, then lead children in preparing and tasting one of the featured recipes, “Beyonce’s Easy Guacamole.” Loukoumi the lamb will accompany Katsoris. Each child will also receive an autographed copy of Loukoumi’s Celebrity Cookbook. English Ivy Pull at Shu Swamp
Join the Huntington- Oyster Bay Audubon Society in helping to restore one of the finest preserves on Long Island. Come to Shu Swamp at 10 a.m. for this fun and worthwhile effort. Snacks will be provided to the volunteers. Bring garden gloves if you have them as well as clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Participants will also peek around to see if any of the spring ephemerals have begun to blossom. Classic Concert
The concert features the Trinity Church Choir, joined by performers from Friends Academy. Martha Regelmann, Conductor. Gems of choral and instrumental music by Bach, Mozart, Faure and Rutter will be performed. Cello, piano and organ will be featured solo instruments as well as accompaniment for the sublime choral masterpieces. The finale of this delightful concert will combine all the singers and instrumentalists in John Rutter’s dramatic “Out of the Deep,”followed by an inspiring setting of the beloved text, “Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace.” Bring an open heart and enjoy the beautiful music while soaking in the atmosphere of the lovely Stanford White architecture and the soft glow of the Tiffany stained glass windows. Art Walk First Thursday
Art Walk features an international spectrum of contemporary artists. Get some artistic inspiration as you visit local art galleries. Other businesses and sites in town will be displaying artwork. Local restaurants will be exhibiting art and are offering a percentage off on meals, wine tastings and more. Live music entertainment is scheduled. Cafes and restaurants will remain open late for dessert and coffee. The evening will begin with Chase Edwards Gallery, 15 E. Main St. (802-0655) and continues at Atelier Gallery, 9 E. Main St.; Art (that matters), 55 W. Main St. (917-769-9921); The Teaching Studios of Oyster Bay, 115 Audrey Ave. (971-597-2404); and The Artist Club Gallery, 29 Berry Hill Rd. will also be open. Art will also be available for viewing at various downtown merchants, including Canterbury Ales, Jack Halyards and Wild Honey. A Tale of Two Species: The Shorebird-Horseshoe Crab Connection with John L. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Needs Oyster Bay Recruits
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla in the Oyster Bay area is recruiting new members. They are needed to assist the Coast Guard in performing Homeland Security missions and to implement the Coast Guard’s many recreational boating safety programs. No experience or boat is required. Exhibit
The LI Craft Guild in collaboration with the Oyster Bay Historical Society will be exhibiting functional pottery at the Society’s Koenig Center, 20 Summit St., Oyster Bay, through June 24. The juried exhibition, Dinner Served, will feature the work of Long Island’s premiere potters. Puneeta Mittal, chair of the Ceramic Media Group, is a renowned potter whose work has been shown in national and international galleries. She is also recognized as a ceramist, painter and is a professor of ceramics at Adelphi University. This years juror is Yvonne Noonan-Cifarelli, an independent curator and fine art appraiser for not for profit organizations and the private sector. The Oyster Bay Historical Society exhibits its own collection as well as collections on loan from other organizations and museums. Guided Tour of Theodore Roosevelt’s Oyster Bay
Join a Park Ranger every Sunday through May 27 on an easy walk through historic Oyster Bay. The walk will highlight the major sites in the hamlet connected to Theodore Roosevelt and his family. The one-hour program is free and begins at 2 p.m. in the Long Island Railroad parking lot at the Oyster Bay station. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Muttontown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
The Fellowship provides an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie, with talks presented by intelligent enlightening and non-dogmatic speakers who come from the entire spectrum of the arts, history and sciences. This is followed by coffee and an informal discussion circle, held in the turn-of-the-18th century farmhouse in a bucolic setting.
