Our Lady Of 121st Street
Presented by the Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance. Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis, the show will be performed at the Little Theatre May 4, 5, 6 and May 10-13. In Our Lady of 121st Street, the Ortiz Funeral Room is in big trouble. The body of beloved community activist and nun Sister Rose has been stolen from the viewing room, and waiting for her proper return are some of New York City’s most emotionally charged, life-challenged neighborhood denizens, trying to find a place to put their grief, checkered pasts and uncertain futures. The crowd in this dark, insightful and very funny comedy inevitably square off against one another, motivated by rage, pain and a scary desire to come clean – perhaps for the first time. Performances are at 8 p.m., except for Sundays, when they are at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $9 per person ($7 seniors age 55 and over). Tickets sold at the door for that day’s performance are free for college students who have a current valid ID. Spring Rummage Sale
The United Methodist Church of Hempstead, 40 Washington St., is having its Spring Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a white elephant sale, baked goods, clothing, furniture, toys, linens and more for everyone. Refreshments will be available (9 to 11 a.m.) for a nominal donation.
Revitalizing The Church In Society
Presented by the Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the College Center Building. The conference is devoted to analyzing how individual Catholics from the New York metropolitan area are attempting to revitalize their church through their various organizational commitments. The conference is divided into three parts. In the morning, two consecutive panels of six speakers each will explain how through their respective organizational involvements they try to reinvigorate Catholicism. This is followed by an address by Father Brian Barr, a former NCC student, who will highlight some of the efforts in revitalization that have been sponsored by, and taken place in, the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Center. In the afternoon, there will be a panel of four speakers, moderated by Monsignor Robert J. Batule. The panel will discuss a theological overview of the new evangelization, implications for ecumenism, integrating traditional and new media and fighting anti-Catholicism. Call 516-572-7100. Photography And American Sign Language
Beginning today, students who are proficient in American Sign Language can learn about photography from award-winning deaf photographer Alnoe T. Paler. This exciting, one-of-a-kind workshop merges the worlds of photography and American Sign Language. Students will be introduced to the art of photography, including subject matter, composition, and lighting. At the conclusion of the workshop, students have the opportunity to participate in a photography exhibit showcasing the talent of the members of the deaf community. Concert On The Quad
The D’Addario Community Music Appreciation Initiative and the Hofstra University Music Department will present a free outdoor concert from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Hofstra’s South Campus, Hempstead. The concert will feature an eclectic mix of jazz, classical music and new compositions by Hofstra students and alumni. Everything’s Comin’ Up Tulips!
The Hofstra Dutch Spring Music Festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year Hofstra is stepping it up on the South Campus with concert performances, more than 50 vendors, children’s activities and food. The Hofstra Arboretum will also host its annual plant sale. Featured performers include: the Long Island premiere of Shotgun Wedding, performing country classics with a city sensibility; New York’s Most Dangerous Big Band; The East End Trio; Bob Cantwell and the Saturday Night Stompers; and the Hofstra University Jazz Ensemble. The next CE Writers Salon takes place at 7 p.m. and focuses on personal stories and memoirs. Mother’s Day Brunch/Fundraiser

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Meet Author Joe Jackson

“Opportunity and Impact: Works by Émigré Artists.” This original exhibition examines the role of émigré artists in reshaping the nature of American art. The exhibit features artists who arrived from Europe during the early 20th century to present-day émigrés from Africa, Cuba, and South Africa. American art traditions and directions have been profoundly influenced by the contributions of these artists. Furniture Needed
The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
