Cross Country Team Wins Sportsmanship Award
The girls’ Cross Country team from the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School was recently awarded the 2013 Nassau County Track Coaches Association (NCTCA) Sportsmanship Award; this is the second time the team has been awarded this honor in three years. The team was recognized for their exemplary display of sportsmanship during the season. Coaches throughout the county vote every year for student-athletes who exude positive-attitude during all competitions while displaying a high level of respect for the sport and opponents.
Pasadena Students Participate In Pajama-Themed Reading Day
Students and teachers in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Pasadena Elementary School recently participated in “Pajama Day.” Students and teachers wore pajamas to school and took part in various educational activities related to the theme of pajamas and sleep. Students read books and wrote responses to a variety of books, learned about the importance of sleep to the human and learned about the history of pajamas. The Pasadena Elementary School also donated forty pairs of pajamas to families in need as part of the Scholastic Book Clubs’ Pajama Program.
Superintendent’s Highlight Of The Week
We have what I believe to be the best music program in Nassau County. How do I know this? Our students just returned from the All State Concert and a quick glance of the program reveals that we had more students performing than any other school in the state (18). The State generally accepts 8 percent of the qualifying students. They accepted 25 percent from Plainview-Old Bethpage.
And now for the icing on the cake — we have just been notified that we have been selected as a Grammy Signature School semifinalists (www.grammyintheschools.com) for 2014. The Grammy Signature Schools program recognizes public high schools across the U.S. that are providing excellent music education programs for their students. This is quite a prestigious recognition and one deserving of our students and staff.
I have spent the past week attending our holiday concerts and I could not be more proud of the performances. Recently the high school choir dropped by central office and we heard the amazing talent we have in our student body.
They certainly sent us home for the holidays in the true spirit of the season.
