For a view of what nature is offering in the early spring, The Muttontown Preserve in Syosset will host a guided nature walk called, “Hike Muttontown from End to End,” on Sunday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Comprising 550 acres of fields, woodlands and ponds, the preserve includes miles of marked nature trails populated with trees, birds, mammals and amphibians. The preserve also contains historic structures, including the Chelsea Estate and ruins of a mansion once owned by King Zog, the last monarch of Albania.
The walk takes you through several areas, including “Tall Conifers,” where white pine, spruce and larch planted in 1909 reach for the sky; “Succession Field Trail,” farmland that has been reclaimed by the woods; “Hidden Pond,” a kettle pond tucked away in the preserve; and “Glacial Kame,” a hummock of sand and gravel laid down by melting glaciers.
The walk begins at the Bill Paterson Nature Center, Jericho-Oyster Bay Road, and the fee is $5. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required. For more information, call 516-571-8500.
