The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District’s (GNWPCD) commitment to protecting the environment has earned the 5.3 million gallon per day facility the prestigious Vision Long Island Smart Growth Award for sustainability. The multi-million dollar state-of-the-art facility on East Shore Road is among the most environmentally friendly wastewater treatment plants on Long Island, New York State and the entire Northeastern region.
“Sustainability was at the heart of the District’s capital improvements project,” said GNWPCD Chairman Jerry Landsberg. “Our state-of-the-art facility was designed with the goal of reducing the amount of nitrogen discharged into the Long Island Sound, while also being able to recycle waste oil to create biofuel used in the District’s generators.”
The award winning state-of-the-art facility features cutting-edge green technology including a 5.3 million gallon per day oxidation ditch, which drastically reduces nitrogen output. The facility is also fitted with a chlorine-free ultraviolet disinfection system, solar panels and a soon to be completed microturbine generating enough power to reduce energy cost by over $100,000 annually.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized as a leader in sustainability” said District Commissioner Deena Lesser. “The innovation behind the District’s state-of-the-art facility designed to mitigate potential hazards, which accompany seasonal storms is one of the great accomplishments of the District’s multi-million dollar renovation project.”
The environmental achievements of the District over the past four years has garnered the attention of prominent Long Island and New York State elected officials including Congressman Steve Israel, New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, New York State Assemblyman Steve Englebright and Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams, who have toured the trendsetting facility.
“This significant milestone is reflective of the District’s ability to serve as the perfect model for the proposed multi-billion dollar wastewater management facility projects across Long Island and the entire New York State,” added District Commissioner Steve Reiter.
The award predates Great Neck Water Pollution Control District’s upcoming ribbon cutting ceremony that will mark the official launch of the state-of-the-art plant.
