Duckling Tragedy Averted

duckIt isn’t every day you hear “peeping” sounds coming from a street drain.

But that’s just what happened to a landscaper from Bromante Landscape and Design when he was on Miro Drive in Mill Pond Acres the other day.

It turned out that five ducklings had fallen through the grating while walking with their parents, who stood by nervously pacing.

The landscaper, Lewis, went to the door of Sydell Drossman, who lives across the street, seeking help.

Drossman called the police, the fire department and water control only, she said, to get nowhere.

“The police told me to call the fire department and the fire department told me to call the water department, which wasn’t open,” Drossman said.

Left to their own devices, Drossman, Lewis, and by now Michelle Aiello, a representative of Geese-Off, who happened to be in the area, started to try and devise ways to rescue the ducklings. They decided that a long branch with a rope attached, all connected to Michelle’s canvas pocketbook—from which she had emptied everything—might allow them to scoop up the ducklings.

The effort, through trial and error, paid off, with three of the ducklings lifted to safety. Unfortunately, two could not be saved despite valiant efforts.

The rescued ducklings were placed on the grass near a pond. Later in the day, Drossman went down to the pond and saw the reunited family happily swimming together.

“It was a truly heartwarming experience to see the rescued ducklings, especially with their parents,” Drossman said. “And now we see them on the grounds walking as a family.”
