The Recreation Center at the Parkwood Sports Complex certainly has an exciting summer in store for you. This year the varied activities are abundant and there is undoubtedly something for everyone, regardless of age or ability.
New this year: the “sports court,” an area sectioned off for daily activities such as volleyball, indoor soccer, Frisbee and scooter racing.
There is a highlighted sports tournament each week in which teams or individuals are welcome; prior sign-up is mandatory. Some of the upcoming tournaments include street hockey, homerun derby, volleyball and basketball.
In addition to such classic sports, there are arts & crafts, ping pong and other table games. The ever-popular rock wall is back and ready for business. To participate in the rock wall you must first obtain an Extreme Pass at Great Neck House which requires a parent’s signature.
Special events this summer include a staff-run July 4 celebration; a carnival and a magic show on Sunday, July 20; and Harry Potter Day on Sunday, Aug. 10, which will feature broom racing, Quidditch (the sport is monumental throughout the Wizarding World), wand-making and more.
The director at the Rec Center is Great Neck’s own David Schildkraut, who comes to the Park District with a master’s degree in physical education. If you have any suggestions or comments about the Rec Center, speak to Dave and he will see what he can do. He is available during Rec Center hours during the whole summer.
Children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult. You do not have to be a member of the Parkwood Family Aquatic Center to participate.
