A Setauket man was arrested drunken driving after he was allegedly involved in a crash that killed a 45-year-old woman in Smithtown, Suffolk County police said.
Thomas Stavola was driving an Audi northbound on Route 111 when he struck a westbound Mercedes at the corner of East Main Street shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The woman driving the Mercedes, Monica Peterman of Middle Island, was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, where she died. Stavola was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Stavola was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was released on $250,000 bail after being arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
Vehicular Crime Unit detectives impounded the vehicles, are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information on this crash to call them at 631-852-6555.
