Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy graduate Vincent Geritano was among the football players from Maritime College to recently volunteer at the Damon Runyon 5-kilometer run held at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
The members of the football were responsible for assisting spectators, securing the course, while also providing water to runners as they passed by, as well and cleaning up the area after the conclusion of the run.
“It was a great opportunity for our players to give back and volunteer to an organization devoted to supporting cancer research,” said defensive coordinator Vincent DiGaetano. “It gave an opportunity for our players to learn about giving back to the community.”
The course brought runners around the concourse and ramps, while also having to run stairs between levels of the stadium, and even saw runners walk or run on the warning track surrounding the playing field of the six-year old stadium. Nearly 2,800 runners ran the course on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to Plainview’s Geritano, a sophomore offensive lineman, and DiGaetano, the members of the team who volunteered were rising seniors Greg Caneparo, running back, Chris Klass, defensive back, and Chris Shehata, a defensive lineman, along with rising sophomore, a running back from Seaford.
Caneparo is no stranger to volunteer work, as the senior was recently named as a nominee for the 2014 AllState AFC Good Works Team in mid-July.
The fundraising run/walk raises funds to strike out cancer, as the organization has already raised more than $490,000. The funds raised go to support innovative and groundbreaking cancer research.
