Members and guests of North Shore Synagogue’s Brotherhood BBQ and Erev Shabbat Service enjoyed a wonderful summer’s evening in early July with a classic BBQ and services led by Brotherhood, with help from Rabbi Jaimee Shalhevet and Cantor Rich Pilatsky.
“This is a wonderful way to connect with other members of Brotherhood, which focuses on building camaraderie among our members, and instilling a strong sense of community away from the hectic pressures of our day-to-day lives,” said Brotherhood co-president Jeffrey Levine.
As the synagogue begins the second year since Temple Beth Elohim, formerly in Old Bethpage, merged with North Shore Synagogue in Syosset, the attendance that evening demonstrated how smoothly the congregations have come together, with as many congregants and Brotherhood members coming from Plainview and Old Bethpage as from Syosset and nearby communities.
“Our Brotherhood BBQs in the summer and around Sukkot in the fall are among the most popular events at North Shore Synagogue,” noted Brotherhood co-president Michael Rothar. “More than 80 people attended on this beautiful Friday evening.”
In addition to cooking up burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and potato knishes, Brotherhood members led the evening’s Shabbat service. The men led the congregants in prayer in English and Hebrew while Rabbi Shalhevet and Cantor Pilatsky’s voices and guitar accompaniment enhanced the service. The sermon that evening was delivered by Brotherhood co-president Jeffrey Levine.
