Shabbat Under The Stars In Jericho

sShabbat Under the Stars — a traditional Friday evening service accompanied by singing, music, and a barbecue — will be held in the parking lot of Temple or Elohim on Tobie Lane in Jericho Friday, September 5 from 6 to 10 p.m.

This is the seventh year that the annual event, free and open to the entire community, is taking place.

“We hope this joyous event will help introduce our Temple and its offerings to as wide a segment of the Jericho community as possible,” Katz said.

Cantor David Katz, who starred in a recent Temple concert featuring opera, operattas and Broadway shows, will sing at the event. Music will be provided by the Temple band consisting of guitars, a trumpet and drums. Songs will be from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Katz said that the event is designed to introduce the community to the cultural richness of the Temple’s offerings.

“We’d like to develop the Temple as a center for the entire north shore area, providing cultural activities that all members of the community can enjoy, whether or not they’re Temple members,” said Katz.

The barbecue will feature burgers, chicken, hot dogs, veggie burgers and salads.

The formal service, conducted by Rabbi Harvey Abramowitz and Katz, will take place in the parking lot, against the backdrop of the Temple’s stained glass windows.

As part of the evening there will be an area where our students and guests can make cards for members of the Israeli Defense Fund.

This is the beginning of a year-long project that Temple Or Elohim will be pursuing through the Irving L. Weiner Religious School in support of those members of the Israeli army and some of the young children in Israel.

The event will also feature a raffle.

Laurel Fried, publicity chair of the temple, said that last year’s “Shabbat Under the Stars” attracted approximately 300 visitors.
