Students and staff throughout the Hicksville School District recently did their part to give back to the community and charities during the holiday season.
At Dutch Lane Elementary School, students and staff collected toys to donate to the John Theissen collection site in Wantagh. As a prelude to the holiday season, the school also hosted a Scare Away Hunger food drive.
Students and staff at East Street Elementary School collected toys for their Toys for Tots drive, and also added hats, mittens and scarves to their Giving Tree.
At Fork Lane Elementary School, students created decorative paper butterflies for patients battling cancer to cheer them up and donated $1 each toward brain cancer research. Third-graders participated in Operation Gratitude as a way to show appreciation for the nation’s troops, and sent care packages. Fork Lane, along with Burns Avenue Elementary School, raised more than $12,000 for the American Heart Association.
Students and staff at Lee Avenue Elementary School participated in a Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. clothing donation drive in memory of late teacher Mary D’Andrea.
The Student Council at Old Country Road Elementary School held a food drive prior to the holiday season. At Woodland Elementary School, students conducted a coat and toy drive as well as a Giving Tree to benefit the local community.
At Hicksville Middle School, the student council donated 600 pounds of food to Island Harvest, while the 8th Grade Activities Advisory collected toys for the Michael Magro and Sarah Grace Weippert Foundations.
At Hicksville High School, students and staff partnered with the Social Service Volunteers of Nassau to host a gift and toy drive. The school’s Key Club also collaborated with the Kiwanis Club of Hicksville and participated in a food drive for local community members.
