A Carle Place Cake Boss

It was a gigantic yellow bird that opened Andrea Bergin’s eyes to her passion in life.

The Carle Place mom of three was decorating a Sesame Street cake for her son’s birthday party and having trouble getting the fondant Big Bird just right. It took her an hour and a half, but when she finally got it, it was a “euphoric” moment.

“I had always baked and been artistic since I was a small child but it wasn’t until I worked on his cake that I realized I was supposed to do this,” Bergin said. “I really like sharing my skills and having other people involved, and watching them learn.”

Bergin knew she wanted to share her passion for cakes and decorating, but didn’t know how to start. She considered opening a storefront but didn’t want to sacrifice time with her family. But she noticed as she was decorating cakes for other events, that atleast one of her three sons always wanted to be involved and emulate what she was doing. That’s when she got the idea on how to combine her love of decorating and teaching.

This past December, Bergin launched Create A Cake Parties and Events. Bergin brings custom cake decorating parties to people’s homes and venues for birthday parties, ladies nights out and other events. At the events, guests can learn how to make cake decorations out of fondant and personalize their own sugar art masterpieces.

The events offer a refreshing new option for parents sick of the same old children’s parties. And it’s an easy option; Bergin brings all the materials, all the host has to provide is the space, table and chairs.

“Bouncing and sliding and laser tag parties all have their merits, but kids aren’t interacting,” Bergin said. “This is very interactive. Kids are sitting and speaking to each other. This is a calmer version of a party, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.”

Hosts can choose from a variety of themes including Super Mario Bros., Frozen, Circus and Sea Creatures. They can also choose a custom theme. And Bergin modifies the designs for the age group so everyone leaves with a beautifully designed cake.

Bergin said she will make sure guests will leave with something they’re proud of.

“People always leave amazed at what they’re able to do. I’m not just showing you how to ice and put on decorations, I’m showing you how to make decorations. You’ll learn tips and tricks in a fun interactive way,” Bergin said.

In the future, Bergin would love to have a storefront where she can hold classes and do cake decorating parties.

“I want to have a place where we can do classes on weekends or school breaks. There’s a lot of children who are very interested in the culinary arts and cake decorating, and there’s not a lot of options for them,” Bergin said. “I would love for Create a Cake to become a franchise and a household name one day.”
