The Star Program and the Enhanced Star Program is also a big help to seniors. Seniors with very low income can get even more help and get a large percentage of their taxes reduced. All you do is fill out an application with the town.
I was paying over $400 for a tax preparation service. So, last year I tried to save by doing my own taxes. This proved to be a disaster as the state and federal governments said that I had errors on my forms and sent me huge tax bills. I then saw a tax service and they had the state tax cancelled but I paid the IRS.
We pay huge taxes in this country and the poor get very little help. We might as well have remained English colonies! Most of the money we pay to the federal government goes for wars. When have you ever heard the government help the poor in this country or elsewhere? If I were in the government things would be a lot different. I would provide houses to homeless people and single parents that are poor. I would also provide help to the poor in other countries, not just when a disaster strikes and a bit of help is provided. Millions of Germans were left to starve to death after World War 2. The Russians and Polish stole a huge section of Germany and mass murdered all the German civilians-mothers, babies, etc. Some of the Germans were able to flee to the west. A book you might want to read is called East of the Oder. Even American soldiers stole from poor German children. For example in German Boy, the writer says an American soldier demanded his belt. I was 4 years old when the 2nd World War ended in Germany. My mother was able to flee to the west. We came to the States with the help of the international Refugee Organization.
We are living in a difficult time. Many stores are closing. Restaurants are closing. Catholic schools are closing. Times are hard and there are many hungry people on Long Island. So, please remember to donate some food to your church. It will help some hungry person and it will put a huge smile on your face.
