A carjacker stole a man’s SUV at knifepoint in Valley Stream Sunday night, fled the scene and then crashed into the garage of a house minutes later, Nassau County police said.
A 33-year-old man was sitting in the driver’s seat of his Chevy Equinox while parked at the corner of Rottkamp Street and Oliver Avenue when the suspect got in the passenger’s side, an argument ensued and then spilled outside onto the street at 7:26 p.m. Sunday, police said.
“The suspect produces a knife, raises it above his head; the victim kicks the suspect; the suspect then flees back to the vehicle and takes off in it,” Inspector Kenneth Lack told reporters Monday during a news conference at police headquarters. He was unable to elaborate on the words exchanged or the nature of the argument.
Minute later, the suspect crashed the SUV into a garage three and a half miles away on Floral Parkway in Floral Park, police said, and fled the scene on foot.
No injuries were reported. Investigators impounded the vehicle. The suspect is described as a 5-foot, 11-inch-tall black man, 45 to 45 years old, 200 pounds with an unkempt beard, possible dreadlocks, wearing a black jacket and black hat.
