On Nov. 3, locals will head to the polls to vote for several offices, including District Attorney, town supervisor and county legislator. We asked the candidates running for the District 14 county legislator seat—which covers Carle Place, Garden City, Hicksville and portions of Westbury, Jericho, Bethpage, Plainview, West Hempstead, Hempstead and Franklin Square—what made them right for the job. Here’s what they said.
Incumbent: Laura Schaefer (R, I, C)
I am running for re-election to my current seat as county legislator of the 14th district of Nassau County on the Republican, Independence, Conservative and Reform party lines.
I am the right person for the District 14 seat because I have lived and worked in and around the communities of this district for most of my life. I was educated here, have lived through the changes that have occurred in Nassau County and I am personally and professionally invested in the future of this county.
As the current legislator of District 14, I have developed relationships with community leaders and constituents throughout my district and have worked hard to be responsive to their needs in a timely manner. I have also provided funding for various projects throughout my district, some of which include the installation of a chair lift at the Westbury Senior Center, updating the restrooms at the Westbury library to bring them into compliance with the ADA, upgrading Cantiague Park and providing for new LED lighting for the Bethpage Fire Department.
If re-elected, I will continue to support economic development, job growth, and public safety measures that will help to protect our already overburdened taxpayers.
I will also continue to seek out opportunities to keep spending down through various efficiency initiatives and strategic cost cuts that aim to save our residents from an increased tax burden.
Challenger: Sylvia Cabana (D)
I have lived in this district for almost my entire life. I love this area and the people in it and will do anything in my power to bring positive growth and change here. Over the years I have become appalled by the increase in fraud, corruption and cronyism that has come to plague this area and threaten the prosperity of not only current residents, but of our children and other future residents as well. I will not allow Nassau County families to be forced to bear increased costs and taxes brought on by the systematic misappropriation of their hard earned tax dollars.
As a practicing attorney, I will use my litigation skills to confront and end the corruption that is either ignored or encouraged by certain career politicians. As a wife, mother and litigator, I feel honored, privileged and duty bound to run for office and fight for the 14th district, my beloved home.
