Nancy Brennan, MBA, MA, a college application coach and editor, held an interactive College Essay Writing Workshop at the Manhasset library recently before an enthusiastic audience of parents and students.
Brennan is a longtime resident of Manhasset where she raised her family while pursuing a corporate career. For over fifteen years, she has been successfully coaching local and other tristate students through the rigorous college essay writing process.
“The essay is the window for viewing the student as a person,” Brennan says. “According to admissions officers at leading schools, the college essay does matter and can increase a student’s chances for admission at his or her colleges of choice. There are several types of essays, and in any one of them admissions officers want a glimpse of an applicant’s personality, values, interests and passions. They want to know what a student will bring to the classroom and campus life which will compel them to offer a prized seat at the college. Therefore, to make it count, a standout essay needs to be the most thoughtful and polished piece of writing a student has ever produced. At my workshop, I show what it takes to write an engaging essay and how to go about it.”
