Marlo Thomas stars as Alice in Joe DiPietro’s comedy, Clever Little Lies, about devastating truths and the strength of a couple’s marriage. Alice’s husband Bill (Greg Mullavey), returns home after a tennis game with their son, Billy (George Merrick of Honeymoon in Vegas, South Pacific), and seems a little distracted. Alice pries the concern from Bill and immediately detects the adulterous trouble in their son’s marriage to Jane (Kate Wetherhead of Spelling Bee, Legally Blonde—Off-Broadway). She immediately springs into action to bring the young couple, who have a new baby, face-to-face, over dessert.
Throughout the evening, Alice unravels her son’s lies through her own confessions, debunking her seemingly perfect marriage to Bill. How much honesty can any family handle in one night? DiPietro’s story does not spare anyone’s truth-awakening feelings, a script we can all relate to.
An Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe Award winner, Thomas is a perfect fit as this all-knowing mom. Mullavey, with more than 100 Broadway shows under his belt, is an equal delight. And along with Merrick and Wetherhead, this off-Broadway family will have you laughing from start to finish.
Clever Little Lies, directed by David Saint, is a story of imperfect love and imperfect marriages. Clever, funny, shocking and real, Thomas and cast are absolutely charming.
The 90-minute, no-intermission show opened on Oct. 12 at the Westside Theatre, 407 West 43rd St., and will close on Jan. 3. Tickets start at $79 (www.cleverlittlelies.com).
