Westbury and Carle Place students and their friends and families came to the Gold Coast Arts Center on Dec. 7 for an awards presentation for the seventh annual Recycled Artwork Contest.
As part of the program, students use recyclable materials made of metal, paper, rubber, plastic or cloth and create their own unique artwork. More than 1,000 students took part in this year’s competition from all 11 school districts in the Town of North Hempstead.
Designed to spread the powerful message of “Recycle, Reuse and Rethink,” the annual contest requires students to create a work of art using materials that otherwise would have been dumped in landfills.
Nearly three dozen students won in various categories, including environmental message, best use of recycled materials and creativity. Entrants were judged in the elementary, middle school, high school and group categories.
In the elementary school group, Rushmore Avenue Elementary School fifth-grader Annabella Georg-Hyun won honorable mention for her piece “The Wonders of a Gift Card.”
In the middle school group, Westbury Middle School seventh-grade students Brian Richards and Melissa Bell won in the environmental message category for their piece titled “Recycled Peace.” Sixth-graders Isabella Bamios and Diana Lazo from Westbury Middle School also won honorable mention for their work, “Girl Minion.”
In the group category, Westbury High School students won in the best use of recycled materials category for their work titled “Faces of Nature”
All entries will be displayed through Jan. 1, 2016 in the gallery at the Gold Coast Arts Center in the Town of North Hempstead.
