There is a proposal to add another home on the property of the Baxter House, located on the corner of Shore Road and Central. The meeting with the Baxter Estate Zoning Board took place on Monday, Dec. 21.
“The proposal violates numerous provisions of the zoning regulations and it may be an attempt to show that the property cant be used without knocking down the house which was originally built in 1680 or so,” said Port Washington resident and former district attorney candidate Michael Scotto. “With the old Luquer Homestead being knocked down to build a mega mansion, Port is losing its historic structures and history.”
The meeting was well attended. Many spoke, including descendants of Israel Baxter who still live in Port. Chris Bain, Chuck Idol and Michael Scotto also spoke.
“Basically the owner wants to subdivide and justified the request by stating the money she makes from the profits from the second home will go to fixing the Baxter house, but she can’t guarantee the house won’t collapse anyway,” Scotto said. “The board adjourned sine die [without assigning a day for a further meeting or hearing].”
