In 1975, as Paul Allen and Bill Gates founded Microsoft, Paul Saberito along with Oscar Rathaus founded their own successful partnership—Kensington Kosher Deli, located at 27A Middle Neck Rd. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of Kensington Kosher Deli, a family-owned and operated business that offers the finest kosher food to the Great Neck community and beyond.
Owner Paul Saberito first started in the deli industry as a high school student and then continued while attending college at St. John’s University. After graduating with a degree in business administration, Saberito teamed up with Oscar Rathaus, now retired, to create a new deli together. Rathaus had previously owned a deli in the Kensington area of Great Neck, but it burned down. Despite switching locations, they decide to stick with the Kensington name.
When Kensington Deli first opened its doors, it only offered take-out, but now there’s seating for about 24 people in booths and at the counter, which allows for a “cordial and warm environment,” as Saberito described.
“Kensington Deli is the finest deli around,” said longtime customer Bob Lewis. “My favorite things about Kensington Deli are the great food and friendly atmosphere. Over the past 35 years, I have grown to consider the employees as close friends. They serve delicious food, such as my favorite, the Paulie Special [baked brisket of beef served on a lightly toasted club roll with natural gravy and a horseradish sauce] with a side of fries, and are always there to greet you with a smile. I also love taking my grandchildren by for hot dogs and chicken cutlets.”
Tyler Berenson also reflected on Kensington’s impact on her life: “Kensington Deli reminds me of my mom. We would go there after shopping in Great Neck,” she explained. “Now, I am happy to make similar memories by bringing my daughter to Kensington after shopping in town.”
Saberito described the recipe for this success: “The key is we offer the finest kosher food available and treat customers like we would like to be treated. For me it’s not like I am going to a job, but rather to be with friends. I believe Kensington Deli will continue as long as we continue to serve our customers the way we have been.”
