Students serve peers locally and abroad with philanthropic efforts

Westbury High School’s Student Council has overwhelmingly added to the scope of their philanthropic endeavors with each passing school year. Based on the National Student Council’s mission of scholarship, leadership, service and character they have continued to seek out causes which will broaden their commitment to giving back to the community, not only locally, but globally. Last year, they did fundraising and were able to build a bus shelter for the high school’s sister school Nsaba Diaspora in Obodan, Ghana. This year they have been able to send feminine products; without these supplies, the girls of Ghana would miss classes. The student council was also able to send a $1,000 check to aid in the building of a water well.

The Student Council thanks Brumsic Brandon for his continued help in making this global endeavor possible. Student Council continuously strives to make students aware of issues in the local community and also globally. Under the advisorship of Naomi Saddlemire, students have had access to competing in the LI Youth Summit for the past two years and have walked away with the Diana Coleman scholarship. The students work with administrators and teachers to better their community. Recently they took on a school beautification project where they planted a tulip garden in the school’s courtyard, adding a peaceful and serene area to the school’s layout.

They are always actively participating in leadership programs or fundraising for deserving causes. Every year they fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Long Island Chapter, volunteer at The Festival of Trees helping the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, participate in leadership seminars at Molloy College and Dowling College, volunteer throughout the year at academic events in the district including translating at parent-teacher conferences and helping other clubs in the high school like the Young Women’s Workshop, chess tournaments, and the etiquette workshops and Etiquette Dinner.

Student Council not only gets students involved in their local community but teaches them valuable lessons about the world around them and how to be empathetic citizens.
