ESPOIR Promotes Healthy Community

Local residents recently enjoyed kid-friendly events, health and legal services and a day at the park during ESPOIR Youth Program’s community outreach day.

ESPOIR__CESPOIR Youth Program, a Westbury-based nonprofit that offers educational opportunities for students, held the outreach at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in an effort to bring vital services to the community.

“We have doctors and lawyers here, almost all the [local] hospitals are represented here to inform people about health,” said Dr. Samarth Joseph, founder and executive director of ESPOIR. “We had a lot of programs for kids too. Our mission is to provide services to the community.”

More than 500 people attended the afternoon-long event on Friday, July 22. Children enjoyed having their faces painted, people got their blood pressure checked and attendees also learned important health and legal information.

Ana Pena, a staff member from the Maternal and Infant Community Health Collaborative Initiative in Hempstead, said the event was a success.

ESPOIR__B“We wanted to show the community what kind of services we provide and that resources are out there so they know about us and that we’re here to help,” Pena said. “We saw a lot of people and talked to a lot of clients.”

Beneti Sully came to the event with friends and learned more about making healthy choices, walking away with a tote bag filled with educational resources.

“I thought it was very interesting. I wanted to know about how to get healthy and all these stands were helpful,” Sully said.
