Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the town board unanimously approved the adoption of a local zoning law which regulates indoor smoking establishments during the Aug. 9 town board meeting. The law would require new indoor smoking establishments to apply for a permit from the Board of Zoning appeals. Existing stores currently in North Hempstead, with legal permits, would be grandfathered in. The law was proposed by Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio.
In addition, the new law would restrict indoor smoking establishments within a 500-foot radius of areas zoned for residential use. It also prohibits an indoor smoking establishment to be within 1,000 feet of a school, church or other place of religious worship, park, playground or playing field, library, hospital or similar public or semi-public place of general congregation, or non-degree-granting instruction/programs, including tutoring centers, self-defense, dance, swimming, gymnastics and other sports.
