The MacArthur boys basketball team opened its season on a winning note, defeating Hjemly Sports Boarding School from Ringe, Denmark, by a 65-43 score in the opening round of the Jeff Shaw Memorial Baseball Tournament on Dec. 1.
Junior guard Kyle Acquavella matched a career high with 17 points. Junior guard Benny Orlando contributed 15 points. Tom Carroll, Elijah Keating, Jake Sarni, Ryan Wall and Andrew Weissman all tallied their first varsity points in the victory. Angelo Andino had two blocks and two steals in his varsity debut.
The Generals then lost the following day to Bellmore JFK in the tournament final, 43-36. MacArthur closed a 20-point deficit to three points in the final minutes and had possession of the basketball, but couldn’t overtake the Cougars.
The annual tournament is played in memory of Jeffrey Shaw of Levittown, who was an electrician working on the 105th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11.
The Generals have upcoming road games at Massapequa on Dec. 15 and Calhoun on Dec. 20. MacArthur opens the home portion of its conference schedule on Dec. 23, with a 6:30 p.m. game against Long Beach.
