As a culminating Eagle Scout project, Levittown student Zachary Martin, a 10th-grader at Division Avenue High School, honored the school’s graduates
who served in the armed forces. He created a walkway, which surrounds the high school’s Memorial Garden, located on the front lawn’s flagpole and which now contains bricks printed with the service members’ names, branch served and graduation year.
To initiate the project, Martin set up an email account and posted flyers throughout the community to collect names of Division Avenue High School graduates who served in the armed forces. Initially, Martin received 87 names, but by the time he broke ground, there were 200 names printed on bricks, representing each branch of military service.
Martin plans to maintain the walkway for years to come, and will add names as they are brought to his attention. When asked why he chose this project, he stated, “I chose this project because both of my grandparents, many of my uncles and some of my cousins served in the military. This project is important for me because these men and women should be recognized for fighting for our freedom.”
