To show their support for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, four Levittown residents will be auctioning their very own “Creative Cups” on March 16 at 7 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. To make their creative cups, people embellished ordinary bras to fit with stories they wanted to tell. Grace Heaning’s “I Fight Like a Girl” Creative Cup is inspired by a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago. The design prominently features a pink boxing glove.
“She is a role model and regardless of those three words—‘you have cancer’—if every fighter were to be like Louise, they would have a fighting chance,” Heaning said of her friend.
Laurene Gagliano’s Creative Cup was inspired by her mother, who survived breast cancer for 38 years, passing away from Alzheimer’s at the age of 88.
“Being a stoic Irish woman, my mother never allowed her fear or pain to infect the lives of her family,” Gagliano said. “In her honor, my bra illustrates her love and courage as a mother.”
Audrey Rome chose to pay tribute to the biologist and environmental conservationist Rachel Carson. Her design features some elements of the ocean, including sea creatures, shells and nets.
“The passion I have infused into creating this bra symbolizes my dream to conserve our beautiful Earth and every precious creature that calls it home,” Rome said.
“Women of Valor” is the theme of Meghan Cody’s Creative Cup. It was made for her neighbor, who is a breast cancer survivor.
In addition to these four Creative Cups, 133 others will be auctioned at the event. NBC News personality Pat Battle will host the event. To date, sponsors include Goldman Sachs Gives, Leviton Foundation Inc. and Digital Graphic Imagery.
