One woman was killed and two others were injured in a tragic crash in Commack Wednesday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.
According to police, 82-year-old Gerald Weintraub was driving eastbound on Jericho Turnpike at approximately 2 p.m. with his wife in the car when he swerved to avoid striking an ambulance and ended up in oncoming traffic, where the couple’s car was struck by a BMW.
Police said Weintraub was trying to avoid an ambulance that was making a left turn into a driveway.
Barbara Weintraub, 77, was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.
Gerald Weintraub was also transported to Southside Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the BMW was taken to Huntington Hospital, also for treatment of minor injuries.
Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check, police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
