KaleidoZone – Javaka Steptoe: Radiant Child

Through Sunday, May 14

In this exhibit, artist and illustrator Javaka Steptoe tells the story of an artist who has inspired him, Jean-Michel Basquiat. Like Steptoe, Basquiat was raised in New York City, where art became his outlet and earned him worldwide attention. The artwork featured in this exhibit are illustrations from the book Steptoe authored about Basquiat of the same name. The book won the 2017 Caldecott Medal, honoring “the most distinguished American picture book for children, as well as the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Book Award, which recognizes “an African American illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults.” Steptoe’s exhibition combines traditional illustration techniques with unusual material choices to create exciting multi-layered images that capture the life of a dynamic artist.

All ages. Free with museum admission.
