Two women were found inside a burning car in the Green Acres Mall parking garage late Sunday night, but investigators do not suspect foul play, Nassau County police said.
Fifth Precinct patrol officers responded to a report of a car fire in the Sears parking garage at the mall in Valley Stream and after firefighters extinguished the flames, two people were found inside the vehicle at 11:06 p.m., police said.
The victims were pronounced dead at scene. The deaths were initially classified as homicides, but police later said that there “appears to be no apparent criminality at this time.” Their identities were not immediately available.
The case marks the second such discovery on Long Island in a month. A man was previously found dead inside a burning car in the parking lot of Northwell Health at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh at 5 p.m. Friday, March 17.
Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information about this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
