On Thursday, Aug. 3, at 8 p.m., feature film The Broken Ones will be screen at the Long Beach Hotel as part of the Long Beach International Film Festival. The film premiered at the Soho Film Festival in July.
Filmed in New Jersey and New York City, The Broken Ones features an incredibly diverse cast and crew, made up of at least 50 percent women, people of color and members of the LGBT community.
The film is directed by first-time director Elyse Niblett and shot by African American cinematographer Myron Parran, who has worked alongside Quentin Tarantino and many other talented directors and directors of photography in his career. It has an original score composed by up-and-coming Kiley Norton.
In The Broken Ones, two strangers meet and go on an adventure from New Jersey to New York, confronting their darkest fears and overcoming tragedy. Andrea Kelly, a troubled and closed-off young artist in her mid-20s, grapples with being placed by her overbearing mother, Janet (Margaret Colin), who placed her in a sober living house in the suburbs of New Jersey following a string of bad decisions, alcohol and drug abuse.
One afternoon fate introduces her to an equally troubled young man attempting suicide by train. She takes it upon herself to show him the meaning of life through a course of events that take place throughout the night. It isn’t until they end up in New York City that the night takes a turn for the worse and she is faced with darker demons then she was ready for.
