The 14th annual Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run on July 16 was a lot different than in previous years. Plans for construction at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School caused the event to be moved to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, on a tough course that included a tour of the village itself and the dreaded up and down hills from the main parking lot to the Round Swamp Road entrance to the facility.

Runners from Plainview and Old Bethpage won their share of awards in the run, led by Jossi Fritz-Mauer of Old Bethpage, who was the second finisher overall and first in the 30-34 age group with a finishing time of 16 minutes, 58 seconds. Shari Klarfeld of Plainview was the first woman overall to cross the finish line in 19 minutes, 22 seconds.

Plainview youngsters Jake Meyers, Christian Schiavone and Tyler Goldstein swept the 16-19 age group with Meyers (17:51) out-legging Schiavone (17:53) for first place honors and Goldstein third (20:09).

HeartRun 072617B 659x1024 1Danielle Brenner of Plainview took first place honors in the female 12-and-under age group with a finishing time of 26:55 and Danielle’s mom Judith Brenner earned third place honors in the women’s 45-49 age group, scoring in 25:25.

Karen Friedman of Plainview scored first among the Northwell Health Physicians in 25:53 and Robert Shimonski of Plainview took home the third place award in the Northwell employees category.

Among the highlights of the awards ceremony that followed the run was the presentation of a special plaque to Francesca Carlow, the honoree of this year’s run. Carlow and her family have owned Trio Hardware in the heart of Plainview for nearly 50 years, she is the past president of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Chamber of Commerce and currently is the president of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce.
