Student wins esteemed award for project
The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High recently celebrated the accomplishments of senior Daniel Vieira, who was named a scholar in the 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search. Vieira was one of 300 students selected for the award out of more than 1,800 entrants from across the nation. Along with being recognized by the prestigious organization, the Plainview-Old Bethpage senior also received a $2,000 award for his research project.
“We are incredibly proud of Daniel for the hours of work and effort he has put into his studies in the last four years at Plainview-Old Bethpage,” said Dr. Lorna R. Lewis, Superintendent of Schools. “He has been a leader inside and out of the classroom, and this award is just another stepping stone in his professional and personal development.”
Vieira’s project was entitled “A Novel Study on Social Comparison Processes and the Pratfall Effect in the Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Domain.” It focused on the social constructs associated with our growing exposure to machines. He will be in the running to become one of the 40 finalists chosen to compete in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 23 for a top prize of up to $250,000.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competitions for high school seniors. Regeneron is a company founded with the goal of transforming lives through science with the social commitment to supporting the development of innovative young thinkers.
