Nothing makes people come together more than a garden in bloom. More than 30 volunteers gathered at 59 East Fulton Street to build what will become Roosevelt’s first community garden. Partners from Nassau County, MSC Industrial Supply, Strong Youth, the Roosevelt PTSA and the North Shore Land Alliance installed 34 raised beds with another 12 beds to follow shortly. In addition to traditional beds, the garden will feature children’s beds as well as special beds for the handicapped.
The garden, expected to open in early June, will be run by a steering committee of local organizations including nearby churches, schools, and senior citizens groups. Educational seminars will be held to teach new gardeners about planning their beds, vegetable gardening techniques, healthy eating and much more.
“In neighboring communities like Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Manhattan, community gardens have been places where people of all ages and backgrounds come together in the simple shared experience of growing food. The Roosevelt Community Garden will provide this same benefit to our community,” said Andrea Millwood, Land Alliance Associate Director of Communications.
All community members are welcome to participate and invited to sign up for a bed. Opening day is tentatively set for Saturday, June 9. To learn more and/or to secure your bed, contact the Land Alliance at 516-922-1028 or visit www.northshorelandalliance.org/rcg.
