The warm days of summer are the perfect time for Manhasset children who are entering kindergarten up to sixth grade to have fun and enjoy enriching experiences through the Manhasset school district’s annual SCOPE Summer Center program. For pre-kindergartners, Summer Center is the precourser to their first taste of going to school. The experience includes riding on a school bus to and from the program.
This year the SCOPE programs were attended by 200 children who reside in the Manhasset district. The program was hosted by Munsey Park Elementary School. The program, which ran throughout the month of July, is a highly anticipated half-day program. Parents were able to register their children online regardless of whether they attended public school or private school. The only requirement is that the child be of age and a Manhasset resident.
Participants enjoyed physical activities such as basketball, field games, whiffle ball and Project Adventure, the latter of which combines outdoor activity with social-emotional learning through a number of team-building exercises.
Young students cultivated their creative abilities through arts and crafts, such as faux stained-glass projects, jewelry making, sculpting, watercolor painting and the “Yay Clay” class.
Young builders enjoyed the “Looney for Legos” class as well as model making and wood shop, while the young scientists/problem-solvers were engaged with “Extreme STEAM” and “Mad Scientists.”
There was also culinary training through a chef’s class much demanded by children. The program for incoming kindergartners was designed to acclimate the Manhasset district’s newest students to their upcoming elementary school experience. Special guest presenters also brought in live animals for lessons on how they live and their habitats.
Computers, theater and Italian culture were also among the diverse array of offerings that help keep young Manhasset students active and learning throughout the summer months.
