Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Councilmembers Anna Kaplan and Lee Seeman along with Town Clerk Wayne Wink recently attended the Lakeville Estates Civic Association’s first annual barbecue and second annual scholarship awards. The scholarship awards, which were received by New Hyde Park Memorial High School seniors Alana Moran and Stephanie Peteroy, are a service award given to recipients for their outstanding service to the New Hyde Park community. Town officials presented Moran and Peteroy with proclamations of recognition in celebration of their dedication to their community with both girls having an interest in pursuing degrees in special education.
“When I asked the two civics to merge two years ago, my goal was to give back to the community,” said Bill Cutrone, president of the Lakeville Estates Civic Associates. “This scholarship is one of many ways we have accomplished this goal. Lakeville Estates Civic Association has a membership that has grown from 110 paid members to 570 in less than two years. This has enabled us to achieve these goals to give back to our community.”
Moran is currently a youth ministry leader at her church and is involved in outreach programs that are able to be funded through bake sales at her church. She is also a Best Buddies officer, which is a national program that includes special needs children in after school programs with other students at her high school. Moran has participated in fundraising walkathons and team sports both as leader and player. These experiences are all building blocks for Moran’s future career as a special education teacher.
Peteroy, who was born in New Hyde Park, considers her neighbors as her extended family. When the weather is bad, she checks on her elderly neighbors to find out if they need anything from the store and shovels their walkways to ensure they have a safe path to walk if they want to venture outside. There are now eight additional homes that she shovels out after each snowstorm. Peteroy helps working parents in the neighborhood by taking their children to after school CCD classes at her church and is also an active participant in the Lakeville Estates Civic Association projects such as the Beautification Project. She also participated in Earth Day and helped clean up both the north and south side of Hillside Avenue from New Hyde Park Road to Manor Court. Peteroy is a counselor at the YMCA after school program at Hillside Grade School and feels the experience will help her in becoming a special education teacher.
