The Plainview Water District Board of Commissioners are reassuring the Plainview-Old Bethpage community that extensive precautionary measures have been taken to protect the community’s drinking water supply in the event of severe weather. The announcement comes as communities up and down the East Coast prepare for another potential active hurricane season.
“Smart short-term and long-term planning measures taken by the Board over the past several years have prepared us to handle severe weather events of any kind and size,” said Board Chairman Marc Laykind. “More powerful hurricanes are becoming a more frequent reality. The district’s robust resiliency plan will ensure resources are made available to strengthen the capabilities of our infrastructure during any emergency situation.”
In the event of any power outage, the Plainview Water District has its own emergency electrical generator facilities, which are regularly maintained and always on standby to keep water flowing in the event of a severe weather event. These generators keep pumps and treatment facilities online without interruption. In addition, district staff members are well trained to handle a diverse list of emergency situations.
“In the event of a hurricane or other adverse weather events, the District’s facilities and staff are prepared to act swiftly around the clock,” added Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Our emergency response plan can be implemented at will, and it entails activation of contracts that we have been secured with emergency response teams, water testing laboratories and water main repair contractors.”
The district is also a member of New York’s statewide Water/Wastewater Agency Response Network (NYWARN) of utilities that supports and promotes statewide emergency preparedness, disaster response and mutual aid for public and private water and wastewater utilities. As a member of NYWARN, neighboring water suppliers from across the state provide emergency assistance when necessary.
“Through our own preparations and an established network of cooperating water utilities and organizations, residents in our area can rest assured their water needs will be covered during an emergency,” stated Commissioner Amanda Field. “However, residents with particular concerns or those who rely on continuous access to water for medical treatments are encouraged to contact our office so we can ensure all their needs are being adequately fulfilled.”
