Starting this week, Manhasset residents will be impacted by the maintenance scheduled by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) on the Webster Avenue Bridge. The pedestrian and vehicle crossing is located between the Incorporated Village of Plandome Heights and the Incorporated Village of Flower Hill in Manhasset. The work is being done to ensure its continued safety.
The bridge was originally constructed in 1897 to safely transport walkers and automobiles over the LIRR’s Port Washington Branch tracks. Train commuters should leave a few minutes earlier to take into account the closure.
The bridge was to have been replaced over a decade ago when the other bridge on Manhasset Avenue Bridge was completed but never occurred.
“Residents should be aware that the Long Island Railroad anticipates doing the majority of the work between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. and that the repairs are expected to be completed in six weeks,” said Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso.
The Port Washington line was completed in 1898, the Manhasset station was built by the Great Neck and Port Washington Railroad in 1899, the year after the Manhasset viaduct was completed.
There will be a complete closure of Webster Avenue Bridge, while under construction and nearby residents and businesses may experience temporary construction noise. Construction is weather dependent, some weekend work may be performed to take advantage of favorable conditions
The LIRR will make every effort to minimize their construction presence. If you have questions or specific concerns, contact rlattar@lirr.org or call 718-558-7767. For more information, visit www.mta.info/lirr.
