A fire broke out at an apartment complex at 20 Chapel Place on Jan. 9 at 8:34 p.m., according to the Nassau County Police Public Information Office.
“I’ve been hearing nonstop sirens and see fire trucks racing up Grace Avenue for the past 15 minutes,” noted one resident on Facebook.
Nassau Police received a call to respond to the complex for a fire and assisted in evacuating residents from the building. The fire appeared to have originated in an apartment on the third floor.
Great Neck’s Vigilant Fire Department and Alert Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
Meanwhile, several kind and generous residents living nearby posted to the Great Neck Mommies group on Facebook, offering a warm and comfortable place for those evacuated to wait.
The Red Cross responded to the scene and arranged housing for seven families, comprising of 10 adults and one child who were displaced as a result of the fire. No injuries were reported at this time.
The fire was deemed nonsuspicious in nature and the investigation by the Arson/Bomb Squad continues. The fire marshal was present at scene.
“I’m touched at how kind you are to immediately think of others,” said Great Neck Public Schools President Barbara Berkowitz on Facebook, of the thoughtful offers to those displaced. “I just wanted to say that you exhibit the best of Great Neck.”
