The Great Neck North Boys Swim team competed against Massapequa this past week for a second meeting of these rivals this year. The Blazers had the first win of the season and were trying to keep the momentum.

North’s captains, Jonathan Kirshner, Alex Sum and Nilesh Ganguli, led the Blazers to an early lead with excellent swims in the 200-meter individual medley, the 100-meter backstroke and the 50-meter freestyle.

As the meet continued, the Blazers never looked back. The team kept fighting in each event and tried to set personal records in every swim. Jacob Nagar and Benet Rahmanim swam great with personal best times in the 100-meter freestyle events. The North team did not slow down and ended the meet with a victory and a second win over Massapequa.

The next meet was scheduled for Jan. 14 against Rockville Centre’s South Side High School.

The Great Neck North Blazers Boys JVA Basketball team played New Hyde Park on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The Blazers’ record was 6-3 coming into this game.

Terrific performances by Nathaniel Hakim, Manny Hakimian and Matthew Heimowitz led the Blazers to a great win over New Hyde Park. Both teams were battling throughout regulation, but this exciting game had to be decided in overtime.

Heimowitz played a key role in the Blazers’ overtime victory. His 17 points and fantastic defensive skills led his team in this battle. Hakimian also played a key role in the offensive threat for the Blazers.

The next game is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 16, versus Elmont.
