During an in-school filed trip with North Shore Land Alliance educator Karen Mossey, fourth-grade students at Forest Lake Elementary School in the Wantagh School District learned about Long Island’s drinking water and the best ways to protect it.
“The best way to protect our drinking water is to learn about it,” Mossey said.
In addition to learning that 70 percent of the planet is covered in both fresh and salt water, the students received answers to three important questions: “Where does water come from originally?” “Who do we share our water with?” “Can our water be unsafe to drink as we turn on our water faucets?”
The students also learned the components of an aquifer, like that of Long Island, as they used a plastic cup, clay, sand and rocks to build their own. -Wantagh School District
