Levittown’s Division Avenue High School was evacuated on Tuesday morning after receiving a threatening phone call.
No one was injured.
“Earlier this morning, the district received a threat through its anonymous tip line concerning Division Avenue High School,” a district statement said.
Students from Division Avenue were evacuated to Summit Lane Elementary School while the Nassau County Police Department conducted an investigation. The district said the evacuation was “out of an abundance of caution.”
The police were notified about the suspicious call at about 9:30 a.m. It is unclear at this time what the threat was, but there was no immediate threat.
As of 11:45 a.m., the district said the high schoolers are still at Summit Lane.
“Additional security staff, as well as members of the Nassau County Police Department, are at Summit Lane to provide additional support,” a district statement said. “As the earlier message mentioned, all students and staff members are safe.
“The district is providing all DAHS students with hot lunch at Summit Lane and the district is updating parents on an hourly basis to keep them informed of the situation. The district appreciates the cooperation of our students, staff members and parents during this time.”
One person did question the district on the Levittown Tribune’s Facebook page for not notifying parents and guardians in the district’s neighboring schools about the evacuation.
“Why weren’t parents of Levittown school district notified of this?” Jenn Manning-Patalano questioned. “My child goes to one of the Levittown elementary schools and this is the first I’m hearing about it.”
At 1:15 p.m., the Levittown School district said the building has been cleared for students to re-enter.
The statement read, “We will be escorting the students back to Division Avenue High School shortly. Students will finish out the remainder of the day and we anticipate a normal dismissal process. We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter. Student and staff safety is our primary concern at all times.”
