General Douglas MacArthur High School senior Kimberly Mestizo from the Levittown Public Schools was recently recognized as a President’s Volunteer Service Award recipient for her exemplary volunteer service. The award was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. It honors middle and high school students across the nation who have taken pride in volunteering to make their communities and country a better place.
Mestizo plays a large role volunteering both inside and outside of school. At MacArthur High School, she is a member of the Math Honor Society, where she tutors her peers and is a member of the National Honor Society where she also tutors and participates in community service activities and fundraising events.
In addition, Mestizo serves as the president of the school’s World Language Honor Society. With her leadership, members participate in a variety of community service events, including an upcoming visit to the elementary schools to educate younger students on the different languages.
Outside of school, Mestizo is heavily involved in her local church. She is a member of the church’s band ensemble where she plays the guitar and sings. Mestizo practices during the week with the ensemble and together, the group leads the music for the church services every Sunday. She is also a biblical instructor for the children at the church where she educates them through fun activities.
As an award recipient, Mestizo received a certificate and a letter signed by the President of the United States for her outstanding volunteer service.
“It felt amazing to receive this award,” she said. “It’s such a great honor.”
